Using a spirit level is simple. Place the instrument directly on the surface to be measured. If the bubble is in the center, your level is perfect. If the bubble is off-center, then place the instrument on the work surface (a board or a shelf for example). Move the level until the bubble is in the center. Mark the location with a pencil so you know where to place the screws or nails. To measure verticality, place the level against the surface and proceed in the same way as for horizontal measurement.
